The Region - Torres Vedras District - Parish of Maceira

Parish of Maceira

The parish of "Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Maceira" is one of the most recent parishes of the council of Torres Vedras, according to the approval of law nº 34/97 on the 20/06/97, published in the D.R on the 12/07/97.

Occupying a small area of little more than 8km2, it has on its borders the council of Lourinhã to the north, the parish of A-dos-Cunhados to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The parish headquarters is eighteen kilometres from the town of Torres Vedras and six kilometres from the Santa Cruz beach.

This parish is populated essentially by numerous farmlands and two localities which are:

  • Maceira
  • Porto Novo

Visiting the Parish of Maceira

The visiting card is related to the thermal activity of “Aguas Santas do Vimeiro” given the miraculous properties of its waters. The commercial licence gave way to the exploitation of these waters on the 20th of January 1896.
The abundant traces of past presence of roman dominion in Maceira have been discovered gradually by archaeologists the day to day of the populations dwelling in that place.

The patrimony consists of: the "Grutas Pré-Historicas de Maceira", the "Matriz Church", the chapel of "Quinta da Maceira", various windmills, the old "Hospital de Sangue" and the Fort of Porto Novo.

They constitute other places of interest such as the Termas de Santa Isabel, the Fonte dos Frades, the thermal pool, the Vimeiro pools, the foz do Alcabrichel, and the golf course. Being a parish that borders upon the Atlantic Ocean, the following beaches are part of this parish:

  • Praia de Santa Rita Norte
  • Praia do Valmitão
  • Praia de Porto Novo
The most well known and important festivity takes place in Maceira, on the 15th of August, in honour of the patron saint of this same parish.
